Give It Another Go……

Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve shared the stories of people who failed before they eventually achieved wildly spectacular success.

We hear those stories, of…

…Steven Spielberg not being accepted into film school…
…Michael Jordan being cut from his high-school basketball team…
…Walt Disney being fired for “lacking imagination” and “having no original ideas”…

…and we take from that the message that we shouldn’t take our last setback so hard, because the world is full of unappreciated genius.

But that’s the wrong message….

Because many of those setbacks were experienced because they weren’t geniuses at all. Do you think Michael Jordan was an unstoppable fiend on the court, but was cut from the team anyway?

No, of course not. He just wasn’t very good back then. But he practiced and practiced, until he became one of the best who ever lived.

When the Beatles were rejected by recording studios, it’s not because they weren’t understood, it’s because they just weren’t very good. But they kept at it, and thousands of gigs later, they had developed a unique sound and ability that would change the world.

And yes, of course, sometimes genius just isn’t understood….

But more often, it isn’t polished or packaged in the way that it needs to be in order to create the desired impact. And that’s on you! It’s on all of us!

When we experience setbacks, it helps to remind ourselves that the greats have, too. But then we have to go further, and remember that the greats weren’t always that great. Sure, they struggled, and that struggle was an impetus to learn, to grow, and to try harder.

So whatever you’re struggling with, …….let’s give it another go, and try harder. 🙂
